About me
My name is Tim O'Brien. I am a student at NC State University, a computer engineer, web designer, photographer, triathlete, thinker, and doer. This site is a way to showcase and share my work with and to the world.
I am a graduate of Durham School of the Arts, a public high school in downtown D-town North Carolina.
I am a devoted scholar, athlete, photographer, designer, coworker and friend.
I am an experienced and professional photographer with background in almost any situation. I prefer candid pictures that document not destroy, that capture and connect with people.
Copyright License
What can I do exactly with Tim's pictures? How can I get Tim to shoot something for me?
I use a Creative Commons license for the pictures I host here. What is that exactly, and why do I care? Well, photographers classically spend a long time and a lot of effort setting up complex licenses and protecting their images from being copied. I want the people I see and record to enjoy what I do as well. The Creative Commons license I use is Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 and it means that you can share and remix with some conditions. The first is that you must attribute me as the photographer (and in most cases this is taken care of with the watermark). The second condition is that it is noncommercial (you can't sell it or use it on a advertisement or on TV or your commercial web site). The last condition is seen as the viral clause: you must redistribute modified work under the same license.
So what does this mean, what can and can't I do?
You can: post them to your facebook, share them with your family, print them out and share them with your family, or make a photo album. If it involves sharing you are most likely okay.
You can not: sell them, use them in an ad, or make money off them in some other way.
You should: get your prints from me!
For hire
“I like Tim's pictures, and I really want him to do my _____.” I am a candid, mostly available light photographer. Just look at my pictures and see what I mean: I rarely do posed shots, I capture and tell the story of the moment without altering it. This is the way I think photography should be. Sound good to you? I am open to commercial and noncommercial opportunities. The creative commons license I employ covers noncommercial, and I can use ether a rights managed or rights protected license for commerical work. Please email me with details.
