If you like my site and the work that I do please donate though paypal. Also consider ordering prints. Please help support my photography, it is definitely an expensive art.
Prints
I also sell prints of any of the 28,074 pictures here. Do you want some convenient 4x6s or 8.5x11s, both perfect for framing? How about a ginormous (actually in the oxford dictionary) 20x30 poster size print? All are very high quality and professionally done. Just look for the section Order Prints under each picture (It uses a paypal shopping cart).
If you are like me and want hundreds of pictures printed then ordering through me is not a very viable option, so you can: 1) download them all and print themselves then donate (please!) or 2) email me and I'll sell you a cd of an album so you can print all the 4x6s you want.
About me
Hi, my name is Tim O'Brien. I am an alumnus of the high school Durham School of the Arts, year 2008. I Am attending NC State University for engineering until 2012. I run cross country, swim, bike, do triathlons, go orienteering, play ultimate frisbee, and play pickup anything else. I also play trombone and tenor sax, whistle, build stuff, do web design, network and computer engineering, work for habitat for humanity, and volunteer for CleanEnergyDurham.
Oh, and I take pictures.
The total is 28,074 right now. I built this site as a way to share some pictures with friends and family. That really has not changed since then, since January 2007. What has changed? Well, I have added pages, and have redesigned parts, but most obviously there are now many more pictures. My philosophy is in order to become good at anything you must do it as much as you can. I certainly take a lot of pictures. For photography it is important to get as diverse a background of situations and people as well. I do that pretty well too. I have covered sports including soccer, track, cross country, swimming, basketball, lacrosse, wrestling, baseball, softball. I have done performing arts like theater, dance, chorus, guitar, orchestra, and band. I have covered a rally, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, birthdays, a mock crash, field trips, assemblies, parties, pep rallies, and so on. And then there's everything in between. I am a candid photographer, and I shoot my life. Between these great specific events that I choose to and love to attend I shoot the people around me. Some of my friends fret about my never having pictures of myself. They're wrong. Every picture here includes me, each one is through my camera, and through the lens of my life. I enjoy taking pictures, I love seeing what I see, and I love sharing that with others.
Copyright License
What can I do exactly with Tim's pictures? How can I get Tim to shoot something for me?
I use a Creative Commons license for the pictures I host here. What is that exactly, and why do I care? Well, photographers classically spend a long time and a lot of effort setting up complex licenses and protecting their images from being copied. I want the people I see and record to enjoy what I do as well. The Creative Commons license I use is Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 and it means that you can share and remix with some conditions. The first is that you must attribute me as the photographer (and in most cases this is taken care of with the watermark). The second condition is that it is noncommercial (you can't sell it or use it on a advertisement or on TV or your commercial web site). The last condition is seen as the viral clause: you must redistribute modified work under the same license.
So what does this mean, what can and can't I do?
- You can: post them to your facebook, share them with your family, print them out and share them with your family, or make a photo album. If it involves sharing you are most likely okay.
- You can not: sell them, use them in an ad, or make money off them in some other way.
- You should: get your prints from me!
For hire
“I like Tim's pictures, and I really want him to do my _____.” I am a candid, available light photographer. Just look at my pictures and see what I mean: I do not use flash and I rarely do posed shots, I capture and tell the story of the moment without altering it. This is the way I think photography should be. Sound good to you? I am open to commercial and noncommercial opportunities. The creative commons license I employ covers noncommercial, and I can use ether a rights managed or rights protected license for commerical work. Please email me with details for a quote.
